Public Perception - In the News

What we see and how we interpret it is causing a stir in the lesser news this morning.  This note on the Daily Shot is an interesting look at how the public perceives what the media presents.

  1. Thanks for sharing this! I'm just shocked by the overtly displays of sexual behavior displayed in the grocery check outline.

  2. Do you plan on doing an analysis of this photograph for last week's assignment?

  3. I will treat this as a photograph as it is the photo that is causing the stir.

    1. The camera angle puts the controversial nature of the photograph front and center. And there is not doubt that the photographer knew that this would be a controversial photo as did the magazine.
2 & 3. The framing and the lighting are standard for a photo shoot for a magazine cover. There is nothing special in them. It is the posing and the content that is of significence.
    4. The imagry in this photo is powerful. The following appears with the photo on Daily Shot: "Four domestic rights and women's advocacy groups have asked Conde Nast to pull the new Vogue International cover from its shelves. Organization leaders charge that the image of model Stephanie Seymour, appearing to be choked by a lover, glorifies violence as an act of love." As the text on the image is French I was not able to interpre it, however, it is obvious to me that this imagery is speaking to control and passion in a relationship. The male model is obviously enjoying the position and he is giving the illusion of control with his hand on her throat. However, it also appears that she is comfortable with the position as her eyes show submission. His hand cupping her breast gives a strong sensual tone and gentles the image as it is covered by text, but also because it is not an aggressive manipulation.
